When to book your Maternity Session

4 simple steps to finding and booking your Maternity Photographer!

1. Find a photographer whose style you love

Search on Google for "maternity and newborn photographers near me".

Why do I include newborn too? Some photographers mainly focus and advertise only for newborns, yet still offer maternity sessions as an add-on when booked newborn session.

Browse each photographer's website and their gallery to see if their photographic style is something that you're drawn to.  While those 9 months may seem like they take forever to get through, your pregnancy will be over in a blink. Those precious moments of feeling and seeing your baby move, kick and grow will only be a memory....UNLESS you document it in a photograph.

2. When should I plan/schedule my Maternity Session?

It really depends on how you're feeling in your pregnancy and how much you are showing.
Generally the best time is towards the end of the 2nd trimester. By that time frame, your baby bump is showing (and gorgeous!), the morning sickness (if you had it) has fully subsided, and the potential swelling hasn't kicked in yet.

Every mama carries their baby differently.  For myself, I had large babies and was showing quite well into my 2nd trimester.  I have also had mamas that had a tiny baby bump and were photographed around week 36!

I strongly recommend NOT waiting that long though!  Because it runs risk of missing your session if baby decides they want to greet you earlier than 38/40 weeks!  So plan around the 24-28 week mark, but we can always reschedule a few weeks later to let your baby grow a bit more if you so desire.

3. Hair and Makeup & Styling

Your maternity session is a time to be pampered and to show off your beautiful baby bump! Look for a photographer that offers Hair and Makeup with your session. If they don't, definitely don't skimp on this part!

Treat yourself, mama. Call your favorite salon or makeup provider after you schedule your session.

Merle Norman was a popular choice for my clients to go to get pampered!  Now I offer complimentary hair and makeup styling for my maternity clients.

It's ALL about you, mamas!

Styling/Outfits

Many photographers have maternity gowns, on hand, to choose from in a variety of styles and colors. I also recommend places like PinkBlush or Etsy if you'd like to purchase and bring your own gown.

4. Where should I have my Maternity Session photographed?

Down here, in the Savannah, Ga area, we have 2 seasons: Hot and not so hot. (ha!)

Some photographers have an indoor studio space and some may not.
For the cooler months, either outdoor or indoor sessions can offer gorgeous maternity portraits.

For those hotter, gnat-filled-summer-months, definitely opt for a studio/indoor session. It'll keep your makeup, hair and YOU feeling beautiful and relaxed and not run the risk of getting overheated and overtired.
